Boutique Hostel Patria, was located on the first floor of a 19th-century tenement building on Mikołowska Street in the heart of Katowice, invited seven Silesian designers to create seven distinctly different rooms (each with a bedroom and bathroom). The design concept was inspired by the keywords “1920s and 1930s Silesia” and “Katowice Modernism,” with each designer receiving a budget of 10,000 PLN to furnish their space.

For the room we were assigned to design, we focused on three main elements. The first was functionality. A hotel room should offer more than just a place to sleep. We incorporated a custom city map along the walls of the bedroom, allowing guests to explore key landmarks of Silesia’s capital. Additionally, we provided flyers detailing the locations of specific sites.
The second element was the urban character of the location. The room overlooks a bustling street and a green square. We highlighted this aspect by creating a designated area within the room and bathroom where the view and the local ambiance are most prominent for the user to experience and connect with.
Lastly, we aimed to infuse the room with elements characteristic of our perception of space—combining design with attention to graphic details (such as period fonts and art deco-inspired lines, furniture outlines, and a color-divided bathroom) while treating even a small space as part of a comprehensive design process.
