Project for the Jubilee Exhibition Commemorating the 200th Anniversary of the Katowice Mine The history of the “Katowice” (“Ferdynand”) mine began in 1823. Initially, the simple extraction of shallow coal seams gradually evolved into a valuable mining facility. Successive owners, administrators, and managers made efforts to equip it with the latest technical innovations, while numerous generations of miners worked diligently to access the rich deposits found in this place.

The mine’s operations were also accompanied by many social initiatives over the years, covering various fields. People associated with the mine can recount stories about cultural events, Barbórka celebrations (Saint Barbara’s Day), employee vacations, and sports events for hours. The mine has been closed, but its memory endures. This place received an opportunity that many other facilities among the several dozen operating in the Silesian Voivodeship did not have.
A significant portion of the historical buildings has been preserved, and through adaptation for the needs of the Silesian Museum in Katowice, it has become a showcase for Silesia, one of the region’s most prominent spaces. Out of respect for the place, its rich history, traditions, and the tens of thousands of people connected to it both professionally and emotionally, the 200th anniversary of the mine has been commemorated with a jubilee exhibition.
